Psychology of Music and Pedagogy of Instrument: seeking the balance between theoretical activities and their practical applications in the coping of anxiety in music performance
The Psychology of Music/performance is an auxiliary field of knowledge of pedagogy of instruments and singing, of an interdisciplinary nature. Search the anxiety in musical performance, symptoms, situations, and variables that may to unleash it, with the aim of teaching, discussing and experimenting strategies to minimize or control this sensation, since anxiety is a normal and necessary reaction of our organism (OLIVEIRA, 2001, p. 169) therefore, it is necessary to learn to deal with it. In the first stage of our research, we applied a questionnaire containing 10 questions to 134 students of the School of Music of Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, aiming to obtain data regarding the sensation of anxiety, its symptoms and the possible use of licit or illicit substances in an attempt to reduce it. After analyzing the data we found that: 77.6% of respondents considered themselves anxious; 78.4% were they feel anxious on stage; The most common physical symptoms are: palpitation, tremors, muscle tension and restlessness. It was found that, to alleviate anxiety, 6.7% already illicit substances, 11.9% used alcohol and 11.2% used alcohol. medicines. The second stage of the research is being carried out with 28 students, addressing in practice three coping strategies / simulations: (i) Acceleration of heart rate / performance energy optimization; (ii) Capacity of concentration / focus; (iii) Relaxation ability. Through these experiments / simulations, we search for the balance between theoretical and practical applications. We base our research based on such authors as: Kenny (2011), Oliveira (2001), Radocy & Boyle (2003), McGrath et. al. (2017), Silva (2011), DSM-5 (2014), Greene (2002), among others.
