Resumo

O presente trabalho investiga a retórica da Fuga opus 87 n° 4 de Dmitri Shostakovich. Para atingir tal objetivo, foram utilizados os trabalhos de Lester (1986, 2001), Harrison (1990) e Roberts (2004). Neste último, estão os princípios metodológicos utilizados para a realização desta pesquisa, os quais consistem, basicamente, no reconhecimento dos elementos identificadores [notable properties], termo utilizado por Roberts para denominar propriedades distintas de uma fuga. Roberts (2004) aplicou seu método para reconhecer a natureza, retórica ou literal de quatro fugas de Bach para órgão (BWV 533, 545, 547 e 578). Na fuga dupla n° 4, em Mi menor, de Shostakovich foram encontrados cinco elementos identificadores: graus da escala em suspensão, ambigüidade tonal/modal, relação entre Integrantes, presença do terceiro contra-sujeito para um dos sujeitos e seções paralelas intensificadas. No discurso, a presença e inter-relações mútuas dos elementos identificadores estabelecem conflitos, os quais são resolvidos revelando a natureza retórica da composição.

This study aims to investigate the rhetor ical nature of Fugue No. 4, from the collection of the 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, by Dmitri Shostakovich. Works by Lester (1986, 2001), Harrison (1990) and Roberts (2004) form the basis of this research. The latter contains the methodology utilized in the present study, consisting basically of the recognition of notable properties in fugues, that is, properties that distinguish one fugue from another. Roberts (2004) applied this method so as to de termine the nature of a fugue – rhetorical or literal – in four organ fugues by J.S. Bach (BWV 533, 545, 547 and 578). In Fugue No. 4, Op. 87, by Shostakovich, a double fugue in E minor, five notable properties were encountered: scale degrees in suspension, tonal/modal ambiguity, the relationship between Integrants, the presence of a third counter-subject for the firs t subject, and intensified parallel-sections. Throughout the fugue, these notable properties create conflicts due to their presence and inter-relationships. However, in the end they are resolved, revealing the rhetorical nature of this fugue.
