Resumo

A música congregacional é uma expressão de adoração que acontece no contexto do culto cristão na qual música e religião estão relacionadas. Surgiu historicamente durante a Reforma Protestante, a partir da necessidade da participação da congregação cristã nas reuniões religiosas. Nesta expressão os conceitos musicais estão relacionados com outras áreas como história, filosofia, teologia e educação, consideradas nesta pesquisa. Assim sendo, apresentamos um resumo do surgimento histórico dos batistas no século XVI até a chegada ao Brasil com a criação da Convenção Batista Brasileira (CBB) e abordamos as filosofias da CBB, a filosofia histórica, a de culto, assim como as funções da música. Sendo a Primeira Igreja Evangélica Batista de Maceió (PIB de Maceió) a comunidade escolhida como base para esta pesquisa, descrevemos sua história, suas atividades, seus cultos, sua estrutura organizacional e a atuação do Ministro de música. Em seguida, discorremos sobre os tipos de música existentes nesse contexto eclesiástico, sobre a relação entre seu calendário de atividades e a música, sobre o ensino-aprendizagem musical e sobre a relação entre tecnologia e mudança cultural e musical. Descrevemos, também, os cultos batistas e relacionamos a filosofia da música congregacional com as partes dos cultos. Outros aspectos filosóficos também foram discutidos, como o serviço voluntário, a função de ensino, a criatividade musical, e a liberdade musical e religiosa. A questão principal girou em torno dos textos dos cânticos e hinos e da importância dessa música congregacional. São apresentadas as opiniões dos “de dentro” sobre as funções dessa música no culto, e sobre os critérios de seleção do repertório musical. A predominância da música contemporânea sobre a tradicional é analisada e resumimos os principais aspectos musicais congregacionais. A pesquisa de campo nos leva a crer que nesta expressão as filosofias conduzem o fazer musical e que esta filosofia se traduz nos textos dos cânticos e hinos, representando assim essa cultura e, que a sua função principal parece ser a comunicação com Deus, o que faz com que a música congregacional seja uma forma de expressão importante para essa comunidade. Neste contexto música é utilizada para enculturar e ensinar, pois é portadora de cultura e conhecimento.

Congregational music is a worship expression that occurs in the context of Christian cult in which music and religion are related. Historically, it emerged during the Protestant Reformation from the necessity of the congregation participation in the religious meetings. In this expression the musical concepts are related to other areas such as history, philosophy, theology and education, and all will be taken in into consideration in this research. Therefore, we have presented a summary of the historical emergence of the Baptists in the sixteenth century until their arrival in Brazil and the creation of the Brazilian Baptist Convention (CBB) and we approached the philosophies of the CBB, the historic philosophy of the Baptists and the philosophy of the cult, as well as the functions of the music. Being the First Evangelical Baptist Church of Maceió (PIB de Maceió) the community chosen as the basis for this study, we have described its history, its activities, its worship service, its organizational structure and the functions of the Minister of music. Then we discus about the types of ecclesiastical music in that context, the relationship between their calendar of activities and music, the teaching and learning of music, and the issue of the technology related to cultural and musical change. We also describe the Baptist's cults, and relate the philosophy of the congregational music with the parts of the worship services. Other philosophical aspects were also discussed, such as volunteer service, the function of teaching, musical creativity, and musical and religious freedom. The main discussion revolved around the study of the song texts and hymns and the importance of this congregational music. It has been presented the views of “insiders” about the functions of music in the cult, and about the criteria for selection of musical repertoire. The prevalence of contemporary upon traditional music has been analyzed and we summarized the main congregational musical aspects. The field research leads us to believe that in this expression the philosophies conducts the music-making and that this philosophy is reflected in the songs and hymns texts, thus representing that culture and its main function that seems to be the communication with God, which makes the congregational music such an important form of expression to this community. In this context music is used to teach and enculturate because it is a culture and knowledge bearer.
