A palavra textura designa, segundo a definição do dicionário Robert, a disposição dos fios de uma coisa tecida, aplicando-se naturalmente aos princípios da tecelagem e, por extensão, pode concernir à disposição (arrangement) de elementos sonoros. No vocabulário musical, o termo textura é pouco frequente e em geral ignorado pelos dicionários especializados; essa noção ocupa, entretanto, um lugar determinante na reflexão de um grande número de compositores desde os anos cinquenta. Permitindo considerar especialmente por um prisma novo as questões de timbre ea concepção da escrita orquestral, ela será examinada sucessivamente nas obras de Ligeti, Lutoslawski, Brown, Carter, Feldman e através do percurso eletroacústico.

Texture and material in contemporary musical thought

The word texture designates, according the definition of the Robert dictionary, the arrangement of the threads of something woven, applying naturally to the principles of weaving, and, by extension, may concern the arrangement of sound elements.Within the music vocabulary, the term texture is infrequent and generally ignored by the specialized dictionaries; this notion assumes, however, a crucial place in the reflection of a considerable number of composers since the fifties. Allowing for a particularly renewed consideration of matters of timbre and orchestral writing, it shall hereby be examined successively in the works of Ligeti, Lutoslawski, Brown, Carter, Feldman as well as throughout the electroacoustic endeavour.
