Resumo

Em 1965 a Banda Sinfónica da Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) deslocou-se ao Brasil a fim de representar Portugal nas comemorações do "IV Centenário da Fundação da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro". Além do enorme sucesso artístico alcançado nas apresentações públicas, foram lançadas as bases para uma posterior colaboração e intercâmbio artístico entre ambos os países, muito graças ao chefe desta banda – o maestro Manuel da Silva Dionísio (1912-2000). Para fazer o levantamento das informações relativas a este maestro e a esta banda e em concreto à viagem efetuada ao Brasil em 1965, percorremos o espólio pessoal do maestro Silva Dionísio, que se encontra no Arquivo da Banda Sinfónica da GNR ainda por catalogar. Este trabalho pretende contribuir para o conhecimento e a compreensão da relação musical existente entre Portugal e o Brasil nas décadas de 60 e 70 do século XX, particularmente a ligação do maestro Silva Dionísio e da Banda Sinfónica da GNR com aquele país, bem como os posteriores frutos dos contatos lá estabelecidos.

Silva Dionísio in Brazil with the Symphonic Band of GNR: the birth of a wave of musical cooperation?

In 1965 the Symphonic Band of the Portuguese National Republican Guard (Guarda Nacional Republicana, or GNR) travelled to Brazil in order to represent Portugal in the celebration of the "IV Centennial Anniversary of the Foundation of the City of Rio de Janeiro". In addition to the remarkable artistic success achieved with its public appearances, this tour provided the groundwork for much ensuing cultural collaboration and exchange between the two countries, which owed much to the head of that band, maestro Manuel da Silva Dionísio (1912-2000). In order to collect information on this maestro, his band, and particularly to the trip to Brazil in 1965, we have surveyed maestro Silva Dionísio's personal archive, which is kept amidst the still uncatalogued Archive of the Symphonic Band of GNR. With this work, we intend to contribute toward expanding the knowledge and understanding of the musical relations between Portugal and Brazil in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, and most particularly the connection of maestro Silva Dionísio and the Symphonic Band of GNR with that country, as well as the later results of the contacts established on that occasion.
