Resumo

As últimas décadas do século XVIII sofreram modificações políticas e culturais que influenciaram o aumento do número de músicos militares em escala global. Dentre essas modificações, destacam-se a valorização dos regimentos do Exército como integrantes da autoridade do Estado e o declínio dos modelos de patrocínio e aprendizagem musical de origem aristocrática. De 1770 até o início da Primeira Guerra Mundial, observa-se uma grande difusão das bandas militares ao redor do mundo (HERBERT; BARLOW, 2013: 2. WHITWELL, 2010: 267). Os conjuntos que se instituíram nos regimentos militares nesse período apresentaram práticas que se conectaram, ultrapassando suas fronteiras nacionais. O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar o surgimento das bandas militares na Europa e no Brasil e das práticas adotadas por esses grupos, principalmente a partir da história sociomusical da banda de música da Força Policial Militar do Ceará. Serão abordados temas como a responsabilidade dos militares no patrocínio da música no século XIX, a aprendizagem musical que se organizou no interior das instituições militares, a contratação de músicos civis para as bandas, as formas de pagamento dos músicos e os contratos estabelecidos para tocar em eventos não militares. O artigo conclui que as práticas vivenciadas nas bandas militares em nível local conectaram-se a dinâmicas globais mais amplas.

Connected musical practices: military bands of the “long nineteenth century” and the band of music of the Military Police Force of Ceará

The late eighteenth century endured political and cultural changes that influenced an increase in the number of military musicians on a global scale. Among these developments, we highlight the increasing status of army corps as members of state authority and the decline of the models of music sponsorship and learning of aristocratic origin. From 1770 until the beginning of the First World War, military bands spread around the world (HERBERT; BARLOW, 2013: 2. WHITWELL, 2010: 267). The military ensembles established during this period shared practices among groups from beyond their national borders. This article aims to analyze the emergence of military bands in Europe and Brazil and the practices adopted by these groups, mainly from a perspective of the social and musical history of the band of music of the Military Police Force of the state of Ceará (Brazil). We will address topics such as the importance of the military for sponsoring music in the nineteenth century, the music education developed within military institutions, the hiring of civilian musicians for the bands, and payment methods and contracts to allow musicians to play in non-military events. The article concludes that practices of the military band at the local level were connected to the broader global dynamics.
