Resumo

Em Portugal, Josephinne Amann (1840-1887) foi a primeira mulher a reger uma orquestra, em 1879, e Joana Carneiro (1976) é o nome que é hoje internacionalmente reconhecido. Nos mais de cem anos que separam Amann de Carneiro várias outras mulheres tentaram uma carreira na direção de orquestra em Portugal. Em 1928 Francine Benoît (1894-1990) apresentou-se à frente de uma orquestra, tornando-se a primeira mulher a reger sob ditadura. Nas décadas entre 1930 e 1960 mais mulheres se aventuraram na direção, entre as quais se salientam por atividade regular Berta Alves de Sousa (1906-1997), Natércia Couto (1924-1999) e Elvira de Freitas (1927-2015). Mas a carreira de maestra de todas estas mulheres foi curta. O percurso das mulheres maestras em Portugal foi marcado pelo regime político vigente e pelas suas relações com este, bem como pela ideologia de género dominante e respectiva opressão exercida sobre as mulheres. Neste artigo traça-se uma cronologia das mulheres maestras em Portugal durante o período ditatorial (1926-1974), prestando especial atenção aos seus percursos biográficos, incluindo origem de classe e familiar, e afinidades políticas.

For the Historiography of Women Conductors in Portugal: women conductors under the dictatorship (1926-1974)

In Portugal, Josephine Amann (1840-1887) was the first woman conducting an orchestra, in 1879, and Joana Carneiro (1976) is the contemporary internationally renowned name. In the over a century that separates Amann from Carneiro, several other women have attempted a career in orchestra conducting in Portugal. It was only in 1928 that Francine Benoît (1894-1990) conducted an orchestra, becoming the first woman to do so under the dictatorship. In the decades between 1930 and 1960, more women followed, among which Berta Alves de Sousa (1906-1997), Natércia Couto (1924-1999) and Elvira de Freitas (1927-2015) stand out for the most regular activity. However, all these women ́s conducting calling was short-lived. The career of women conductors in Portugal was shaped by the ruling regime and these women ́s relationship with it, as well as by the dominant gender ideology and the respective oppression of women. In this article, I build a chronology of women conductors in Portugal during the dictatorship (1926-1974), paying special attention to their biographies, including their class and family origin, and their political affinities.
