Resumo

Este artigo considera a teoria musical como disciplina independente, propondo-se a discutir o que é a teoria musical e quais são os problemas da teoria moderna. Diferentemente do que muitos acreditam, a teoria musical vai além do conhecimento dos fundamentos da música. Assim como o alfabeto é apenas uma base para a linguística ou para a literatura, os fundamentos musicais são apenas conhecimentos iniciais da teoria, daí a necessidade de um estudo aprofundado. Esse artigo inclui um resumo da longa história da teoria musical e seus teóricos. O objetivo é reconhecer o indiscutível valor da teoria musical, encorajar seus praticantes a descobrirem novos rumos e incentivar o desenvolvimento de novos subcampos.

The Development of Music Theory as an Independent Discipline: Beginnings, Conflicts, and New Directions

This article asserts that music theory is an independent discipline and proposes to discuss what it is and the issues of modern theory. Contrary to popular believe, music theory goes beyond knowing the fundamentals of music. Just as the alphabet is only a basis for linguistics or literature, the fundamentals of music is only the beginning of understanding music theory, leading, therefore, to the need for more profound study. This article includes a review of the long history of music theory and its scholars. The objective is to recognize the indisputable value of music theory to encourage its users to innovate and promote the development of new fields.
