Resumo

Este artigo apresenta uma discussão sobre a existência de fatores que representam as primeiras definições do termo “choro” na capital maranhense do final do séc. XIX. O fio condutor dessa discussão é a comparação entre os contextos musicais e “paramusicais” (cenários, ações, habitat social etc.) das cidades São Luís (MA) e Rio de Janeiro (RJ) do final do séc. XIX. Para fundamentar a discussão utilizo a pesquisa bibliográfica em trabalhos acadêmicos, obras literárias e recortes de jornal.

Choro Music in São Luís: Perspectives of Choro in the Capital of the State of Maranhão (Brazil) in theEnd of the 19th Century

This article presents a discussion about the existence of factors that represented the first definitions of the term “choro” in the capital of the state of Maranhão (MA) in the end of the 19th century. The main argumentation relies on the comparison between the musical and para-musical contexts (surroundings, actions, social habitat, etc.) in the cities of São Luís (MA) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ) in the end of the 19th century. In order to support this discussion, I use bibliographical research of academic work, literary work and newspaper articles.
