Resumo

Notations, publicado em 1969 por John Cage e Alison Knowles, reflete o profundo interesse do compositor pelas diferentes formas e possibilidades de notação musical. O livro apresenta uma coleção de manuscritos musicais de 269 compositores, sendo a maioria da década de 1960. O objetivo deste artigo não é apontar conclusões interpretativas a respeito de Notations, e sim instigar o leitor à uma leitura reflexiva e crítica, mostrando que é possível operar diferentes caminhos para alcançar infinitas interpretações. A discussão segue à luz das propostas teóricas de Umberto Eco, que problematiza o papel do leitor no processo de interpretação da obra literária. Este artigo faz parte de uma pesquisa, em nível de mestrado, ainda em desenvolvimento.

Notations (1969): Between Scores, Drawing, Scribbles and Words

Notations (1969), published in 1969 by John Cage and Alison Knowles, reflects the deep interest of the composer about the different forms and possibilities of musical notation. The book presents a collection of musical manuscripts by 269 composers, most of them belonging to the 1960s. The objective of this research is not to bring interpretative conclusions regarding the book, but to instigate the reader to a reflective and critical reading, showing different possibilities of fruition. The discussion flows in the light of theoretical proposals of Umberto Eco, who problematize the role of the reader in the process of interpretation of a literary work This paper is part of a research in development, at master’s level.
