Maracatu Solar: The process of learning in percussive practices by orality
Maracatu Solar is a continuing education program of the Solidarity and Art Cultural Association, whose goal is to train new Maracatu practitioners, encompassing the teaching of percussion, dance and creating performing shows, under the rhythmic and aesthetic conception of Descartes Gadelha and presidency of Pingo de Fortaleza. From the point of view of percussion learners, this work investigates the training experience carried out during 2018, which culminated in the recording of the first Maracatu Solar DVD and the Carnival 2019 presentation cycle. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the results percussion teaching by orality with learners without prior knowledge of musical theory or instrumental practice. The hypothesis of the effectiveness of this form of teaching is based on the text “Orality, Improvisation and Corporality” by Goli Guerreiro. The qualitative research was based on the author's experience and an unstructured interview with other learner. The teachings and conducting were rotated by several masters, among them: Fernanda Brasileiro, Griô Descartes Gadelha and Catherine Furtado. Over the course of a year, without the use of traditional score notation system, the repertoire presented in the phonographic record “Um Cada Um Cada Sol” was assimilated, and new conductors were formed, such as Levi Magalhães, who on several times conduct the group and took over classes.
