Resumo

Para a celebração dos 400 anos da edição do 1º Fólio de Shakespeare (1623) preparamos uma homenagem com a recepção e estudo de "Under the greenwood tree", uma canção de William Shakespeare para As You Like It, II.v. (Como Gostais), visando esclarecer a função da música na cena, sua motivação original, como se insere no diálogo protagonizado pelos personagens, transportando o público para o mundo dourado da floresta das Ardenas "onde não há inimigos a não ser o inverno e o mau tempo". (II.v.6–8) Para tanto, dividimos o artigo em várias camadas de comentários e, ao final, disponibilizamos a partitura composta para a canção por Thomas Augustine Arne, com o coro adicionado por William Linley ‒ o exemplo mais antigo encontrado, uma vez que a música original para esta canção se perdeu.

In harmony with nature: reception and study of "Under the greenwood tree" – a song by William Shakespeare for As You Like It

To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the edition of Shakespeare's First Folio (1623), we honour the author with the study of "Under the greenwood tree", a song by Shakespeare for As You Like It, II.v., aiming to clarify the role of the music in the scene, its original motivation, how it fits within the dialogue performed by the characters, transporting the audience to the golden world of the forest of Arden where ‘there are no enemies but winter and rough weather’. (II.v.6–8) To this purpose, we divided the article into several layers of commentaries and, at the end, we provided the music score composed for the song by Thomas Augustine Arne, with the Choir of Foresters added by William Linley, the earlier example to be found, since the original music of this song has been lost.
