Resumo

Carlos Gomes permaneceu durante alguns dias em Portugal, ao final de 1863, quando se dirigia à Itália pela primeira vez. Após sua estreia em Milão, Il Guarany demorou 10 anos para ser apresentado em Lisboa, em 1880, sendo bem recebido pelo público, mas parte da crítica foi-lhe desfavorável. Estudamos a recepção da ópera em Lisboa e homenagens posteriores recebidas pelo compositor, em algumas de suas muitas passagens por terras portuguesas, tentando vislumbrar sua imagem local.

Carlos Gomes and Portugal: More than just a stay

Carlos Gomes stayed in Portugal for a couple days, by the end of 1863, when he was heading to Italy for the first time. After the premiere of Il Guarani in Milan, it took 10 years untill his oeuvre was finally shown in Lisbon – and that was 1880 – being well received by the public, however a part of the critics wasn’t pleased. We study the reception of his opera in Lisbon and later homages payed to the composer, in some of his many stays in portuguese lands, trying to elucidade his local image.
