Resumo

O objetivo do presente artigo é caracterizar as práticas do canto coletivo e do canto coral em Moçambique. Baseado em vários estudos, tratamos da Makwayela, das Canções Revolucionárias e do movimento coral em Maputo, abrangendo grupos específicos, como o Majescoral, e eventos, como o Fest Coros. Abordamos, também, os princípios que norteiam a criação e execução dos repertórios tradicionais cantados polifonicamente, incluindo aqueles ligados à harmonia e à condução vocal. Os resultados apontam que o ato de cantar em conjunto, em Moçambique, antecede a era colonial e a implantação das igrejas cristãs e que o canto coletivo tem os seus elementos típicos, que se desenvolvem dentro de um contexto social. Ademais, observamos o Fest Coros e o trabalho de várias instituições públicas e privadas ajudam na massificação do canto coral no país. Por fim, concluímos que esse tipo de investigação amplia a visibilidade da prática coral moçambicana em outros contextos, expandindo as possibilidades de atuação de coros, regentes e preparadores vocais.

Collective singing and choral music: a study on Mozambican vocal music

The objective of this article is to characterize the practices of collective singing and choral music in Mozambique. Based on several studies, we deal with the Makwayela, the Revolutionary Songs and the choral movement in Maputo, covering specific groups, as for example the Majescoral, and specific events, such as the Fest Coros. We also approach the principles that guide the creation and execution of traditional repertoires sung polyphonically, including those linked to harmony and vocal conduction. The results indicate that the act of singing together in Mozambique predates the colonial era and the establishment of Christian churches and that collective singing has its typical elements, which develop within a social context. In addition, we observe that Fest Coros and the work of various public and private institutions help in the massification of choral singing in the country. Finally, we conclude that this type of investigation increases the visibility of Mozambican choral practice in other contexts, expanding the possibilities of performance of choirs, conductors and vocal coaches.
