Resumo

A partir do séc. XVI, a melancolia se tornou umas das “doenças” da Era Elisabetana. Ao final desse século, a grande maioria das peças musicais inglesas, tanto vocais quanto instrumentais, continha figuras melancólicas. John Dowland é um dos principais representantes da melancolia elisabetana e se utilizou de diversos emblemas musicais para representá-la em suas obras. Dentre suas peças, algumas das mais representativas desta melancolia são as Seven Tears ou Lachrimae, que formam um ciclo de sete pavanas. O objetivo deste artigo é abordar a primeira das pavanas, Lachrimae Antiquae, através de uma análise retórica. Inicialmente, definiremos a melancolia musical elisabetana encontrando elementos que posteriormente serão utilizados em todas as Seven Tears de John Dowland.

The Seven Tears of John Dowland – Lachrimae Antiquae

In the 16th century, during the Elizabethan age, Melancholy had been manifested as a ‘disease’. At the end of this century, in most English musical pieces, vocal as well as instrumental, there contained melancholic figures. John Dowland is the probably considered as most representative of Elizabethan melancholy in his music. He uses several musical symbols to represent it in his works. Among his pieces, the most representative for melancholy is found in the Seven Tears or Lachrimae, a cycle of seven pavans. The object of this article is to present the first of these pavans, Lachrimae Antiquae, through rhetoric analysis, defining the musical melancholy in the Elizabethan Age and pointing elements which will be consequently used in all of the Seven Tears of John Dowland.
