Resumo

O presente artigo discorre a respeito da harmônica de vidro, instrumento inventado em Londres por Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), em meados do século XVIII, tratando da história de sua invenção e popularização e de seu funcionamento. Além disso, o texto descreve as relações de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) com o instrumento e alguns de seus importantes intérpretes, tecendo também comentários a respeito de características idiomáticas da escrita para a harmônica de vidro presentes nas obras nas quais o compositor a utiliza.

Benjamin Franklin’sGlass Harmonica and the Relationship of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with the Instrument

This paper discourses about the glass harmonica, an instrument invented in London by Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), in the middle of the 18th century, speaking about the history of its invention and popularization, and also about its functioning. In addition, this text describes the relationship of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) with the instrument and some of its important performers, also commenting about characteristics of the glass harmonica’s idiomatic writing which can be found in the pieces written by the composer for this instrument.
