Resumo

É particularmente notável a participação, no período daredemocratização brasileira, dos músicos associados à formação cultural denominadaClube da Esquina, encabeçados pela figura emblemática de Milton Nascimento. Aliando a investigação histórica aos estudos de música popular, abordamos suas escolhas e invenções estéticas e políticas, compreendendo a participação em concertos integrados a campanhas fulcrais (Anistia, Diretas Já), seu envolvimento junto a movimentos sociais e a criação cancional, evidenciando em sua obra o balanço histórico do que se passara e a reivindicação por viver um tempo de novas perspectivas e sonhos possibilitados pelo restabelecimento da democracia.

“Even so it’s worth trying to invent a new song”: the Clube da Esquina (Corner Club) and the redemocratization in Brazil (1978-1985)

In the period of Brazilian redemocratization, it is particularly noteworthy the engagement of musicians associated with the cultural formation called Clube da Esquina(Corner Club), headed by the emblematic figure of Milton Nascimento. Combining historical research with popular music studies, we approach their aesthetic and political choices and inventions, including engaging on concerts integrated with key campaigns (Amnesty, Direct election Now), their involvement with social movements and their song writing, showing in their work the historical balance of what had happened and the demand to live a time of new perspectives and dreams made possible by the reestablishment of democracy.
